Generic Medication guide:
What is Risperdal and when should it be used?
Risperdal is a trademark registered by Janssen-Cilag pharmaceutical company owned by the concern Johnson & Johnson. The active agent of the product sold under this name is Risperidone that is also available in a form of generic, i.e. the same formulation made and sold by other companies under other names. When your medical care provider tells you to buy Risperdal you can as well purchase a generic. For instance, on this webpage we offer you the medication made by a reputable generic-making company Cipla several times cheaper than the branded medication.
Risperdal and generics with the same composition are used for:
- Schizophrenia and other psychotic disorders with productive (delirium, aggressiveness), negative (emotional and detachment, lack of speech) or affective manifestations;
- Behavior deviations resulting from progressing dementia, manifestation of aggression, psychotic symptoms, etc.;
- Delayed mental development or a reduced level of intelligence with destructive behavior symptoms;
- Bipolar disorder’s mania (as an additional therapy).
If you believe that you or someone from your family members may benefit from the use of this medicinal product remember that you can buy generic Risperdal without Rx from our pharmacy but it would be wiser to consult a medical specialist before doing so.

When is the use of Risperdal contraindicated?
The use of the formulation is unsafe in:
- The substantial sensitivity to the active agent or to the auxiliary substance of the medicine;
- Dementia with the signs of Parkinson's disease (rigidity of muscles, bradykinesia and parkinsonian impairment of posture).
- Dementia with Lewy bodies when besides dementia symptoms are also present symptoms of Parkinsonism, visual hallucinations, and unsteadiness.
Besides, the medication use reasonability and safety should be thoroughly estimated by a qualified medical worker in such conditions:
- Congestive heart failure;
- Myocardial infarction;
- AV block and other conduction disorders;
- Impaired brain circulation;
- Moderately to severely impaired liver and/or kidney function;
- Mammary gland cancer;
- Hypovolemia (low volume of circulating blood);
- Parkinson’s disease;
- Epilepsy;
- Pregnancy;
- Breastfeeding;
- Age under fifteen years.
Risperdal administration during pregnancy or breastfeeding
If the risk to the fetus is considered lower than the anticipated benefit to the mother, the medicine can be administered during gestation but it must not be used when a woman breastfeeds.
Dosages of Risperdal for different disorders
You may wonder how to use Risperdal in different conditions. There are two options – you can either discuss with your doctor how you should take the medication or follow the instruction. The first option is better since your healthcare provider knows your illness history and can choose the optimal dosage regimen as well as advise you on dosage adjustments or adverse effects to which you should pay special attention and possibly discontinue the therapy with this particular formulation.
The label of the medicine provides the following recommendations:
The dosage of Risperdal prescribed for a day can be administered one time a day or in two intakes.
- Schizophrenia treatment course is started with 2 mg at the first day with the subsequent daily elevation of the dose by 2 mg till the achievement of the desired effect but not over 16 mg a day. The higher dosages substantially elevate the likelihood of extrapyramidal disorders. The doses higher than 8 mg must be divided into two intakes.
- Dementia accompanied by behavior changes described as the indications for the formulation use requires the administration of 1 mg of Risperdal a day.
- Manic episodes are started to be managed with 2 mg a day with the subsequent increase of the dosage daily till the optimal effect is obtained but not over 6 mg.
- Belated mental development or low intelligence accompanied by destructive behavior are treated with 1 mg daily in patients with the body weight over 50 kg.
As in the case with any symptomatic therapy, the dosages of Risperidone must be reconsidered and adjusted frequently throughout the treatment course. There is no information on the long-term use (more than three months) of the medication for bipolar disorder’s mania.
Patients who suffer from excessive sleepiness during the formulation use can be administered the daily dosage in two intakes.
If the medicine is used along with mood stabilizers, the therapy can be ceased earlier as the results are expected to be noticed earlier, within a couple weeks of the course.
Even if the therapy had been successful, it is impotent to acknowledge that there is a likelihood of repeated symptoms occurrence.
When you order Risperdal, you should know that the cessation of the therapy must be done through the phasing out of the daily dosage as the sharp cessation of the pills use causes acute abstinence manifestations such as nausea, vomiting, sweating, and sleeplessness. There may also be a relapse of psychotic symptoms and involuntary movements.

Dosages for separate age groups
- Senior patients (older than 65) should be given the initial dosage of 0.5 mg two times a day. If needed, the dosage can be raised to 1-2 mg taken twice a day. The dosage raise must be done with not more than 0.5 mg two times a day. The use of the medication in this group of patients must be done with caution.
- If you order generic Risperdal for children (the medicine can be used in pediatric patients over ten years of age), you should give them the initial dosage of 0.5 mg one time per day. The dosage can be phased up by 0.5 to 1 mg one time a day but not sooner than every twenty-four hours till the achievement of the recommended dosage of 2.5 mg a day. The efficiency of the therapy is observed based on the individual patient’s features in the dosages from 0.5 to 6 mg a day. The dosages over 6 mg had not been studied.
Risperdal adverse effects
The most common adverse effects associated with the formulation used reported by more than 10% of patients are Parkinsonism, sleepiness, headache, and insomnia. Parkinsonism is a dose-dependent adverse effect that is more likely to occur in high dosage use or at the dosage increase.
Other possible adverse effects of Risperdal are:
- Convulsions (seizures),
- Stroke (in predisposed senior patients),
- Blurred vision.
- Reflex tachycardia,
- Arterial pressure elevation,
- Nausea,
- Pain in the stomach,
- Constipation, and others.
The likelihood of particular adverse effects is higher if a patient already has the disorders or diseases of a certain body system.

Overdose signs and treatment
The signs that an individual overdosed are the enhanced adverse effects such as sleepiness, tachycardia (irregular or rapid heartbeat), low blood pressure as well as extrapyramidal symptoms (fidgeting, stepping from foot to foot), seizures, etc.
An overdose of Risperdal requires urgent medical assistance. At a hospital, doctors need to make sure a patient can breathe and maintain the airways free. Then, gastric lavage and the appointment of activated carbon or other sorbents with a laxative can be indicated, but not later than one hour after taking the formulation. Besides, cardiovascular activity monitoring and respective maintenance measures should be taken if any heart symptoms develop.
In case severe extrapyramidal symptoms develop, anticholinergic medicines should be appointed. The supervision is required until the patient is fully recovered.
Interactions of Risperdal with other medicines or substances
- The intake of Risperdal lowers the effect of Levodopa and other medicines that promo the level of dopamine.
- Phenothiazines, tricyclic antidepressants, Fluoxetine, and beta-blockers can raise the level of Risperidone in plasma.
- In the same-time use with Carbamazepine or other inductors of the liver enzymes, the level of the active substance of the antipsychotic is lowered so the dosage elevation can be required with subsequent lowering the dosage if the inductors of the enzymes are canceled.
- Benzodiazepines, alcohol, and substances that depress the CNS enhance the sedative effect of the medicine.
- Antagonists of dopamine receptors elevate the risk of late dyskinesia.
- In simultaneous use with formulations that lower the arterial pressure, the hypotensive effect of Risperdal can be lowered.
Please talk to your medical care provider before you order Risperidone for yourself or your family member if the person for whom the medicine is receives any other medicines.
Precautions
In the development of late dyskinesia, it is advised to consider the cancellation of the therapy.
People whose work requires quick reactions and in lack of them can be dangerous for an individual who takes Risperidone or others must refrain from using the medicine when working or take sick days for the course of the therapy.
During the therapy, it is advised to not consume alcohol.
During the transition to the medicine from other antipsychotics, it is advised, if possible, to fully discontinue the use of other antipsychotics.
The medicine must be cautiously combined with any medicines that influence the CNS.
During the therapy, it is advised to avoid overeating as it can result in weight gain.
