Generic Medication guide:
What is Avelox and when can it be used?
Avelox is the name of the antibacterial product made by the German pharmaceutical company Bayer pharmaceuticals. The formulation is based on the internationally available and included in the list of essential medicines by the WHO antibacterial agent Moxifloxacin. The formulation was patented by Bayer in 1991 but now it also available in a form of generic. It means that if you want to save on the therapy when you have a prescription to buy Avelox, you can get the same medication but made by another company at a lower price.
Avelox can be appointed for the therapy of bacterial infectious diseases induced by the pathogens sensitive to the formulation.
The diseases treated by the formulation are usually severe ones such as:
- Community-acquired bacterial pneumonia including the types when the pathogens which induce it are antibiotic-resistant.
- Exacerbated skin and soft tissue infections.
- Complicated intra-abdominal infections.
It is important before you buy generic Avelox to make sure that the disease you suffer from is induced by the pathogens that can be eliminated with this medication. To ensure that, your doctor can appoint you susceptibility tests. However, a long-practicing specialist can appoint you the treatment course with the formulation without the tests as he or she could assess the condition and the best medicinal products to be used for it only with a physical examination and studying the patient’s medical history.

The less strict contraindications, i.e. when at a doctor’ discretion the medication still can be used but with caution are:
- Elongated QT interval;
- Uncorrected hypokalemia;

- Severe hepatic impairment.
Is Avelox use admissible during pregnancy?
There hadn’t been sufficiently long and controlled clinical trials of the medication in pregnant women so it is unclear whether the medication can or cannot cause any harm to the baby. Thus, the formulation is contraindicated to be used by women who are pregnant or breastfeed unless their doctor believes the therapy will have more good than negative results.

Avelox adverse effects
When you buy Moxifloxacin, you need to be informed about the negative effects that can accompany the therapy:
- Nausea;
- Dizziness;
- Diarrhea.
The rare adverse effects that still can develop especially in people with predisposing conditions are:
- Headache, general weakness, sleeplessness, nervousness, anxiety, tremor, taste violation, agitation, seizures, confusion, etc.
- Tachycardia, elongation of QT interval, pain in the chest, etc.
- Dry mouth, bloating, constipation, loss of appetite, colitis, gastritis, etc.
- Vaginal candidiasis, kidney function impairment;
- Allergic reactions, skin rash, swelling, ache in the stomach, increased sensitivity to light, and others.
Discuss with your doctor the likelihood of adverse effects occurrence based on your other conditions and ask them how you should react if the negative symptoms occur before you buy generic Moxifloxacin.
Interactions
The formulation itself can contribute to the elongation of the QT interval so it must not be used with other products that also can potentially have this effect:
- Antiarrhythmic medicines of the class IA and III (for example, quinidine, disopyramide, amiodarone, ibutilide etc.)
- Antipsychotic formulations (for instance, phenothiazines, haloperidol, sultopride, etc.)
- Tricyclic antidepressive medications;
- Some antimicrobial agents (saquinavir, antimalarial drugs, in particular, halofantrine, and others)
- Some of the antihistamine medicines (terfenadine, astemizole, misolastine)
- Medicines from the other classes such as cisapride, vincamine IV, bepridil, difemanyl, and others.
For the full list consult your doctor.
Besides, the formulation must be cautiously used by people who use the medicines that can lower the potassium level such as loop diuretics, laxatives, corticosteroids, and others.
If a patient uses antacids, Didanosine, Sucralfate, and formulations that contain iron or zinc, the interval between their intake and the use of the antibacterial medication must be around six hours.
Activated carbon use diminishes the amount of the antibiotic active within the body by 80%. Therefore, their simultaneous use is not reasonable except for the overdose of Moxifloxacin when it is required to lower its content in the body.
If you take any medicines, even if you think that they don’t fall into one of these groups, before you order Avelox, discuss the possibility of their combination with this antibiotic with your healthcare provider.
Precautions
- The medication must not be combined with any medicines that elongate QT interval.
- The medication can worsen the condition of patients with bradycardia or myocardial ischemia.
- The use of the antibiotic can cause the occurrence of seizures as well as other CNS disorders manifested in tremor, dizziness, confusion, hallucinations, and so on. If such symptoms occur, the medication use must be instantly stopped. Besides, it is, in general, must be cautiously used in the presence or suspicion of the CNS illness.
- The use of the antibiotic can cause the symptoms of colitis. Thus, in case diarrhea occurs while taking the pills, a patient must inform their doctor and receive adequate treatment.
- The use of the formulation can contribute to the tendonitis and rupture of the tendon (Achilles and others) especially in patients over 60. Thus in the occurrence of ache, inflammation or rupture of the tendon, the use of the medication must be stopped and adequate therapy implemented.
