Generic Medication guide:
What is Cleocin and when is it used?
Cleocin is a brand owned by Pfizer, an American pharmaceutical giant and the leading pharmaceutical company in the world. The brand is registered and promoted for a semi-synthetic antibiotic from the group of lincosamides. It is an analog of Lincomycin with an improved pharmacological profile which made it preferred in the majority of countries over its predecessor.
The formulation is also available under other names as a generic version, i.e. less promoted cheaper medication made by other companies. If you want to save when you buy Cleocin, look for a generic version or a medication with whatever name but with the active ingredient Clindamycin written below it.
The medication has a quite narrow range of antimicrobial activity. It is mainly effective against non-spore-forming anaerobes and gram-positive cocci and also moderately active against some protozoal infections. There are different forms of the medication – topical and for systemic use (oral capsules).
The formulation can be prescribed for:
- Tonsillitis, throat infections, ear infections;
- Bronchitis, pneumonia, lung abscess, pleural empyema, fibrosing alveolitis.
- Infection of bones and joints - osteomyelitis, septic arthritis;
- Infections of the skin and soft tissues: acne, boils, phlegmon, impetigo, infected wounds, abscesses, erysipelas, and others;

When is Cleocin prohibited to be used?
Do not use the formulation if:
- You are hypersensitive to this antibiotic or Lincomycin.
- Have history or predisposition to regional enteritis, ulcerative colitis or antibiotic-associated colitis.
The medication can be used but cautiously and only at a doctor’s discretion in:
- Myasthenia;
- Severe liver or kidney failure;
- Children younger than one month.
Dosing of Cleocin
The formulation is taken orally with a full glass of water to prevent the irritation of the esophagus. As for any other antibiotics, the dosing and the course duration are chosen individually based on such factors as the severity of the infection, sensitivity of the pathogens, and others. Here you can find the averages dosages.
Adults
The daily dosage is from 600 to 1800 mg divided into three or four intakes.
In exceptional cases of recurrent infections induced by -hemolytic streptococcus the dosage of 300 mg two times a day for at least ten days is appointed.
Cervicitis caused by Chlamydia trachomatis is treated with 1800 mg divided into several intakes and taken for ten or fourteen days.
Children aged 6 and older
The daily dosage is 8-25 mg per kg of the body weight split into three to four intakes.
Dosage adjustments
- Patients with kidney failure do not require dosage adjustments
- In people with liver dysfunction the half-life of the medication is slowed down but in the intake of standard dosages every 8 hours a dangerous accumulation of the medication doesn’t happen.
It is required to observe the treatment duration recommendations even if the symptoms are eliminated before the course end. The duration of the therapy can be lowered in the occurrence of adverse effects.
Please note that when you buy Clindamycin you must get the precise recommendations on dosing from a doctor who knows your medical history.
Overdosing of Cleocin
The overdose is manifested in the enhanced negative symptoms listed in the adverse effects section. The treatment is symptomatic. The medication isn’t excreted faster in the use of hemodialysis.
Adverse effects of Cleocin
- Pain in the abdomen, nausea, vomiting, ulcer of the esophagus, colitis, bloating, and other.
- Skin rash, hives, itching, erythema multiform, Stevens-Johnson syndrome, exfoliative and vesicle dermatitis, toxic epidermal necrolysis, vaginitis.
- Anaphylaxis;
- Jaundice, changes in liver function.
- Increased urea nitrogen, oliguria, and proteinuria.
- Blood diseases passing after the treatment discontinuation.
Interactions
The simultaneous use of Cleocin with the medicines that slow down the bowel motility can cause colitis and acute pain in the abdomen.
It is not recommended to use Cleocin along with medications that slow down the neuromuscular transmission, muscle relaxers, and general anesthetics due to the risk of muscle weakness and apnea.
The medication acts in synergy with penicillin, gentamycin, ceftazidime, cefoxitin, cefotaxime, mezlocillin, metronidazole, and ciprofloxacin.
It acts as an antagonist of erythromycin and macrolides, therefore this combination should be avoided.
Precautions
When you buy generic Clindamycin you should know that:
- It must be used only for the treatment of infections caused by the pathogens that are proven to be effectively eliminated by this drug.
- The medication isn’t used for the treatment of non-bacterial infections.
- The antibiotic must be cautiously used by people with diseases of the digestive tract because it can cause Pseudomembranous colitis. In diarrhea occurrence, it is required to inform a doctor.
- In the occurrence of hypersensitivity reactions, the therapy must be immediately discontinued and respective treatment made.
