Generic Medication guide:
What is the medication that you can buy as Ilosone?
Ilosone is one of the commercial names for the worldwide used and available under different names antibiotic Erythromycin. It was developed in 1950s and became the first antibiotic from the class of macrolides, i.e. one of the major antibiotic classes with the broad spectrum of range.
The antibiotic renders a bacteriostatic effect, i.e. it slows down the growth and replication of bacteria. It is achieved through the binding to a certain subunit of ribosomes, which disrupts the formation of peptide bonds between amino acid molecules and blocks the synthesis of proteins of microorganisms. Depending on the pathogen, the use of high dosages can render a bactericidal effect.
Since the medication is available under different names, the cost per pill also differs substantially based on the country the formulation is produced and marketed in. An individual, who wants to save on the therapy and is told to buy Ilosone, can as well get the generic version of the medication, i.e. the same formulation made and marketed by other company. It is absolutely legal for different companies to do so and they can use exactly the same formula because the exclusive patent had already expired.

When is Ilosone used?
The use of the formulation is reasonable in the infections proven to be caused by the pathogens that are responsive to the effect of Erythromycin. The diseases that can be caused by such pathogens are:
- Infections of the airways including atypical pneumonia;
- Ear, throat, and nose infections;
- Purulent-inflammatory diseases of the skin and its appendages, erythrasma;
- Diphtheria;
- Gonorrhea;
- Syphilis;
- Listeriosis;
- Legionnaires' disease (a form of atypical pneumonia);
- Infections in dentistry and ophthalmology,
- Infections caused by microorganisms resistant to beta-lactam antibiotics, penicillin, tetracycline, levomycetin, chloramphenicol, and streptomycin.
Before you buy generic Ilosone for any of these illnesses, you need to do susceptibility test to get a proof that the antibiotic will be effective in your case.
Ilosone contraindications for use
The formulation is prohibited to be taken when it can do more harm than good, for instance in:
- High sensitivity to erythromycin and any other components of the medication and/or macrolide antibiotics in general;
- Severe liver failure;
- Heart arrhythmia (including history);
- Simultaneous use with terfenadine, astemizole, pimozide or cisapride, ergotamine and dihydroergotamine (for more dangerous combinations or undesirable drug combinations read the section “Interactions”).
Ilosone use during pregnancy and breastfeeding
There hadn’t been sufficient and well-controlled studies of the medication use during gestation. Therefore, it is advised to use the medication during gestation only in case of emergency, taking into account the risk/benefit ratio.
The formulation penetrates into the breast milk thus it is highly advised to transfer the baby to a bottle feeding for the course of the therapy.
Ilosone dosing
It is always better to buy Erythromycin and use it in accordance to your doctor’s prescription. Nevertheless, the official instruction still provides the general recommendations which can be found below.
The tablets are taken one to an hour and a half hours or two-three hours after a meal.
- Adults should take from 200 to 500 mg four times a day. The highest single dosage is 500 mg. The highest daily dosage is 2000 mg.
- Kids with the body weight from 30 kg and higher are given 50 mg per kg of the body weight divided into four intakes every six hours.
- Kids aged from 2 to 6 years are given on average 500-700 mg a day.
- Kids aged from 6 to 8 years are given on average 700 mg a day.
- Kids aged from 8 to 14 years are given up to 1000 mg a day divided into four intakes.
- Kids older than 14 are given the same dosages as adults.
The treatment duration is from five to fourteen days. After the disappearance of the symptoms, the formulation must be taken for two more days.
Dosage adjustments
Senior patients do not require dosage adjustments but it is recommended to monitor their liver function as in people over 60 can be not fully healthy.
Overdose signs and treatment
The symptoms of an overdose are nausea, vomiting, diarrhea, discomfort in the abdomen, liver dysfunction, dizziness, and others.
The treatment requires gastric lavage, intake of activated carbon, and symptomatic treatment.
Ilosone adverse effects
If you buy generic Erythromycin for the first time, you can start suffering from certain negative effects. Some of them are transient and quite mild but others can indicate that you are intolerant of the medication. Below you can find the list of the most possible adverse effects caused by the formulation use. Consult your medical care provider which ones indicate that you must stop the therapy and which ones are normal.
- Nausea, vomiting, pain in the upper abdomen, diarrhea, loss of appetite, colitis, pancreas dysfunction.
- Liver dysfunction, hepatitis.
- Noise in the ears, impaired hearing (fades once the therapy with the drug is discontinued).
- QT interval elongation, rapid heart rate, arrhythmias.
- Confusion, hallucinations, seizures, dizziness, nightmares.
- Allergic reactions including skin itching, urticaria, anaphylaxis, skin rash, toxic epidermal necrolysis. In case any allergy occurs, the therapy must be immediately discontinued.
- In a long-term use of a repeated course with the formulation superinfection development is possible as it contributes to the growth of bacteria resistant to the antibiotic.
- Candidiasis of the mouth, vaginal candidiasis, myasthenia, fever, and others.
Interactions of Ilosone
Before you order Ilosone, you must get acquainted with the list of the medications it is incompatible with or can negatively interact with. If you take any medicines, make sure to read the full instruction or better consult your doctor.
It is prohibited to combine the use of the antibiotic with:
- Astemizole, terfenadine, cisapride, Pimozide. This combination is fraught with the risk of cardiotoxicity, interval extension, severe heart rhythm disturbances, and even cardiac arrest.
- Ergotamine or dihydroergotamine. This combination is fraught with the reactions of acute toxicity with blood vessels spasm.
The formulation potentiates the effects and toxicity of antihistamine formulations, alkaloids of ergot, theophylline and benzodiazepines, digoxin, anticoagulants of the indirect type of action, carbamazepine, cyclosporine, hexobarbital, phenytoin, disopyramide, lovastatin, and bromocriptine.
The effect of the antibiotic is inactivated by the use of lincomycin, clindamycin and chloramphenicol, medicines that increase the acidity of gastric juice, and sour drinks.
Precautions for Ilosone use
Before the use of the formulation, it is important for a doctor to study the medical history of the patient to see if he or she has ever had a hypersensitivity reaction in response to the use of erythromycin or other macrolide antibiotics. If during the therapy any hypersensitivity reaction occurs, the treatment must be immediately ceased.
Before the use of the medication, to minimize the risk of resistant bacteria development, it is advised to conduct susceptibility test to identify the pathogen and its sensitivity to the antibiotic.
Erythromycin can cause liver dysfunction as it is metabolized and excreted by the liver mainly. Thus, it should be carefully used by people with liver dysfunction including the history of liver diseases. It is also not recommended to use it along with any medications that render a toxic effect on the liver. In case a long-term therapy with Ilosone is prescribed or high doses are used for a short period of time, it is necessary to do liver tests.
Senior age patients are more susceptible to the QT interval elongations and arrhythmias. Thus, the medication must be used cautiously and canceled if any negative symptoms develop.
Doctors need to monitor people with asthma who take Theophylline and erythromycin as well as assess the level of Theophylline in the blood to prevent intoxication.
The formulation can enhance the symptoms of myasthenia gravis.
Before you order generic Ilosone you must be informed that the use of antibiotics causes the imbalance of the flora in the intestines which can cause the development of Pseudomembranous colitis. It can develop during the therapy or in the following two months. The main symptom is diarrhea that doesn’t stop for a couple of days. In the occurrence of this symptom, you must seek medical assistance and do not take any medications that slow down the bowel peristalsis (movement).
