Generic Medication guide:
What is Avalide and when is it used?
The substances on which the product sold under the name Avalide is sold are Irbesartan and Hydrochlorothiazide. They render an antihypertensive effect that is needed in hypertension and some other cardiovascular diseases. The commercial name Avalide is a trademark owned by the New York-based pharmaceutical company Bristol-Myers Squibb but the same product is also produced by other companies and is simply named differently. If you want to buy Avalide cheap, you should look for its generic versions, i.e. the same medication made by other producers.
The medication is a combined product which is appointed for the therapy of hypertension in adults in whom the use of Irbesartan or Hydrochlorothiazide separately is not sufficient.
How does the medication act?
The formulation consists of two components which complement each other and thus it renders a better effect than the drugs based on a single component.
Irbesartan is an angiotensin II receptor antagonist and Hydrochlorothiazide is a thiazide diuretic.
Irbesartan is responsible for suppressing angiotensin-II which is the major hormone that causes hypertension and other cardiovascular diseases.
Hydrochlorothiazide is a diuretic that is responsible for the blood lowering through the washing out of excess fluid from the body. Thiazides affect the mechanisms of reabsorption of electrolytes in the renal canals, directly increasing the washing out of sodium and chloride in nearly the same amount. The drug contributes to the lowering of the blood plasma volume, an increase of plasma renin activity, secretion of aldosterone which enhances washing out of potassium with urine. However, probably due to the blocking of renin-angiotensin in a combined formulation where Irbesartan is present, the potassium loss is compensated.
The effect of the medication showed in lowering of arterial pressure occurs after the first dosage intake and the maximum stable effect is achieved within 6-8 weeks of uninterrupted pills’ use.
Avalide contraindications for use
You should not buy generic Avalide if you have an increased sensitivity to the components of the pills or other agents that are sulfonamide derivatives. Besides, the drug use is unsafe and therefore contraindicated in:
- Severe form of kidney failure with cc less than 30 ml per minute;

It also must be cautiously used in people with diabetes, moderate to severe kidney failure with cc around 60 ml per minute.
The pills are taken once a day without regard to meals.
Sometimes a doctor can gradually increase the dosages of the medication components by prescribing them separately.
The uses of combination formulation have the following dosing per day:
- Irbesartan 150/Hydrochlorothiazide 12.5 mg;
- Irbesartan 300/Hydrochlorothiazide 12.5 mg;
- Irbesartan 300/Hydrochlorothiazide 25 mg.
Higher dosages per day are not recommended. Please note that the dosage must be chosen by a healthcare professional based on your disease progressing and your response to the therapy. Do not raise the dosage without first consulting a doctor. Besides, it is possible to use the medication with other antihypertensive medications but only a medical professional can choose them for you.
- Individuals with kidney failure with cc more than 30 ml per minute do not require dosage adjustments but individuals with cc less than 30 ml are contraindicated to use the formulation.
- Individuals with mild to moderate liver failure do not require dosage adjustments while those who have severe liver failure must not use the medication at all.
- Elderly patients do not require dosage adjustments.
The potential symptoms that can develop in an overdose are arterial hypotension, rapid ot slow heartbeat. The first measures are the induction of vomiting and use of activated carbon. Then, based on the severity of negative effects and condition of a patient symptomatic treatment can be done either at home or at a hospital with control over the vital functions and normalization of the water-electrolyte balance.
Avalide adverse effects
When you buy Irbesartan + Hydrochlorothiazide, you should be ready that you may develop certain adverse effects some of which are:
- Increased nitrogen content of blood urea (ACS) and creatinine
- Lowered content of potassium and sodium in serum.
- Dizziness, headache, passing out, tachycardia, swelling, ECG changes, noise in the ears, and others.
- Nausea, vomiting, diarrhea, heartburn, abdominal pain, dyspepsia, dysgeusia;
- Impaired urination, kidney dysfunction, renal failure in patients in a risk group;
- Increased fatigue, dry mouth, and asthenia;
- Hypersensitivity reactions, including edema, rash, urticaria;
- Jaundice, hepatitis, liver dysfunction;
- Violation of sexual function, changes in libido;
- Itchiness, Leukocytoclastic vasculitis.
Consult your healthcare provider to know which of these adverse reactions indicate that you must stop using the pills and inform your doctor immediately. For instance, it is needed to do so in an allergy or hypersensitivity reaction occurrence but given that you can have other predisposing factors such as kidney or liver dysfunction, other adverse effects can also be a sign that you need to stop using the pills.
Please read the full official instruction or better consult your physician before you buy generic Irbesartan + Hydrochlorothiazide if you use any medications as they can be incompatible with this antihypertensive agent. For instance, it is contraindicated to use the medication with any formulations that contain aliskiren for patients who have diabetes or mild to moderate kidney dysfunction. This combination also is not recommended for all other individuals.
The medication mutually enhances the effects of other antihypertensive formulations so their dosages must be chosen or adjusted by a doctor.
The medication also increases the toxicity of Lithium.
If the medication is appointed for individuals with kidney dysfunction, frequent control over the level of calcium, creatinine, and urea in the blood plasma is required.
There is no data on the safety of use of the medication in individuals with recent kidney transplant so the use is possible at a doctor’s discretion.
