It has antacid, adsorbing, enveloping, gastroprotective, antiulcer effect. In the acidic environment of the stomach (at pH below 4), sucrose breaks down into aluminum and sulfate; the former denatures mucus proteins, and the latter combines with them, is fixed on the necrotic masses of the ulcer lesion, forms a protective film that acts as a barrier to the action of pepsin, hydrochloric acid and bile. It adsorbs bile acids, waste products of the microflora of the digestive tract, and reduces the local inflammatory process. In addition, it activates endogenous physiological defense factors, contributing to the secretion of prostaglandins, mucus and bicarbonates in the mucosa of the stomach and duodenum.

The gel firmly covers the ulcer surface in the stomach and duodenum for 6 hours. It does not interact with a healthy mucous membrane.

In the digestive tract, up to 5% of the disaccharide component and less than 0.02% of aluminum are absorbed. It is excreted with feces, a small amount of sulfate disaccharide (which has entered the systemic circulation) is excreted by the kidneys.

Overdose

In most patients, there are no negative consequences after taking Sucralfate in sufficiently high doses. A significant overdose of Sucralfate is unlikely to cause intoxication.

Long-term use of the medication in high doses, especially in impaired kidney function, can cause the accumulation of aluminum in the organism.

Adverse reactions caused by Carafate

When you buy Sucralfate, you should know that it can cause some negative effects:

- Possible bad digestion,

- Constipation or diarrhea,

- Abdominal pain,

- Backache,

- Headache,

- Lightheadedness,

- Sluggishness,

- Dryness of the mouth,

- Nausea,

- Rash,

- Itching,

Interaction with other medicines and other types of interactions

- Carafate mutually enhances the toxicity of medicines containing aluminum (especially in patients with renal failure).

- Antacids, histamine H 2 receptor blockers decrease the activity of the medication. If it is necessary to take antacids, they should be taken half an hour before or after using Sucralfate).

- Carafate diminishes the absorption of tetracyclines, cimetidine, ranitidine, ciprofloxacin, norfloxacin, ofloxacin, digoxin, indirect anticoagulants and Theophylline (if they have to be taken together, the interval must be at least two hours).

- It also reduces the absorption and Phenytoin (possibly renewed trial). The interval between doses is 2 hours.

Special warnings

- In patients with renal failure, serum aluminum and phosphate levels need to be monitored. The appearance of drowsiness and seizures may indicate a toxic effect of aluminum.

- With the combined use of antacids should be prescribed in half an hour before or half an hour after taking Sucralfate.

- Administration through a nasogastric tube can lead to the formation of Bezoaru (a calculus that forms in the digestive tract and is in the form of a ball) with other drugs or solutions for parenteral use (due to the ability to bind protein).

- You can buy Sucralfate and use it during pregnancy if your doctor approves.
