Dosage and administration
When you buy generic Indomethacin, make sure to consult a doctor to get the dosage appointment made based on your individual features.
The pills are taken during or after food, without chewing, and are washed down with milk.
Adults and children over 14 years of age should use an initial dose of 25-50 mg twice or thrice a day. With insufficient therapeutic effect, raise the dosage to 150 mg per day, dividing it into three doses. The highest daily dosage is 200 mg. With prolonged use, the daily dosage should not exceed 75 mg.
Elderly patients need to take the minimum dose for a short period of use and strictly adhere to this treatment because of the high probability of side effects. Gout: to stop an acute attack of gout, use an initial dose of 100 mg, after which take 50 mg 3 times a day until the pain is relieved.
Overdose of Indocin
Symptoms: nausea, vomiting, severe headache, confusion, fatigue, vertigo, and others.
Treatment implies measures to relieve the symptoms and support the body. Gastric emptying should be done as soon as possible if the medication has been taken recently. If there is no spontaneous vomiting, induce vomiting using the patient's Ipecac drugs. If the patient does not vomit, gastric lavage should be made. After emptying the stomach, sorbents can be used. The individual should be observed for two-three days for digestive ulcer and bleeding. The use of antacids may be beneficial.
Interactions of Indocin
Before you order Indocin, make sure that you don’t use any medicines it is incompatible with.
- It is prohibited to use several NSAIDs at once.
- The combination with antibiotics raises the risk of seizures.
- Zalcitabine and Indocin change each other’s effects.
- Zidovudine and Indocin combination raises the risk of hematological toxicity. The toxicity is raised when the medication is used with Ritonavir.
- Caution is needed while using Cyclophosphamide with Indocin.
- SSRI antidepressants used with the formulation elevate the risk of bleeding.
- The formulation should be cautiously used with antiepileptic medicines.
- With haloperidol enhanced sluggishness is observed.
- With triamterene or tacrolimus, the risk of kidney dysfunction enhances.
- Dizziness can be more pronounced when the medication is combined with benzodiazepines.
- Indocin used with Desmopressin enhances the effect of the latter.
- Avoid taking the medication for a week or two after the use of Mifepristone.
- The medication can slow down the elimination of Baclofen and elevates its toxic effects.
- There is a risk of psychosis and the negative effect on the brain is enhanced in combined use with Muromonab-CD3.
- The risk of bleeding is elevated in simultaneous use with medicines that dilate the vessels and blood thinners.
- Diflunisal must not be used with the medication as it elevates its plasma level increases the plasma level and lethal gastrointestinal hemorrhages may occur.
- Digoxin: Indomethacin can raise the level of Digoxin in blood plasma (reduces its washing out with the urine), which requires a dose adjustment and control of the concentration of Digoxin.
- The medication lengthens and enhances the effect of lithium salts and its toxicity, which requires control over the lithium level.
- Immunosuppressants: the use of Indocin and immunosuppressants, such as Methotrexate and cyclosporine, leads to an enhancement of their toxicity. - Diuretics (water pills): NSAIDs reduce the therapeutic effectiveness of diuretics. Diuretics can enhance the toxic effect of Indocin on the kidneys.
- Antihypertensive medicines: the painkiller can weaken the hypotensive effects of these medicines.
- With Corticosteroids, there is an increased risk of digestive ulcerations and hemorrhages.
- Quinolones: The use of quinolones and Indocin may raise the risk of seizures.
- Probenecid: slows down and increases the toxicity of Indocin. If you use any other medicines not listed here, check the package insert for the full list.
Special recommendations
- When you order generic Indocin, keep in mind that the negative reactions can be diminished by using the smallest dosage that provides expected effect and for a short period of time.
- The formulation must be used carefully in any conditions associated with water retention as Indocin can worsen it.
- In connective tissue diseases, there is a higher risk of viral meningitis when Indocin is used.
- After surgery, the medication must be used cautiously since the duration of bleeding can be increased.
- Live vaccines should be used carefully as the medication can hide the symptoms of an inflammation caused by a vaccine.
- Individuals who take the medication for extended time period should regularly do blood tests, tests for liver or stomach function, in order to identify any unwanted effects timely.
- The medication must be cautiously used in sigmoid colon abnormalities.
- In reduced blood flow, in which kidney prostaglandins play a significant role in renal perfusion, NSAIDs can cause severe renal decompensation. The risk group includes kidney or liver dysfunction, diabetes, senior patients, reduced volume of intercellular fluid, congestive heart failure, sepsis, as well as therapy with nephrotoxic drugs at the same time.
- In asthma, the medication must be used carefully as it can provoke bronchospasm.
- There is a risk of hyperkalemia in elderly individuals, kidney failure and use of certain blood-tension lowering medicines.
- The likelihood of side effects from the digestive tract is higher with the use of big dosages especially in the history of ulcers or bleeding. For these individuals, therapy should be started with the minimum dose, taking into account the need for prescription of protective drugs (for instance, proton pump inhibitors). This approach is also recommended in cases of the simultaneous use of aspirin or other medicines that raise the risk of digestive complications (corticosteroids, blood thinners, antiplatelet agents, SSRIs).
- Special care is needed in the therapy of individuals with other diseases of the digestive tract (Crohn's disease), which may worsen with the use of NSAIDs.
- An elevated risk of digestive complications exists in alcohol abusers or smokers, therefore their therapy should be carried out with extreme caution. - Individuals with a history of digestive disturbances need to inform their doctor about any strange abdominal symptoms, especially at the start of the therapy.
- Special care is required when the medication is used along with medicines that may raise the risk of ulceration or hemorrhage (see “Interactions” section). The course must be discontinued if digestive lesions and bleeding occur. - Individuals with elevated arterial tension, heart failure, coronary heart disease, and other severe cardiovascular diseases or presence of risk factors (e.g. obesity, diabetes, smoking) should be prescribed the medication only after careful analysis of the benefit/risk ratio.
- The formulation includes lactose, so if the patient is intolerant of certain sugars, it is necessary to consult a healthcare provider before they order generic Indocin.
